When we were looking for the first DJ of the Week selection since launching our new site, we wanted to select someone who represents the same level of dedication, hustle, and love that we feel we have for the culture, and Jus-Ed, government name Edward McKeithen, easily came to mind!
Jus-Ed embodies the love and commitment necessary to make it in this crazy nitelife, entertainment, music industry we love, and sometimes hate, so much, because he’s been in it for longer than most of us have been alive, or for those close to him in age, since before we even entered puberty. Now, why did I have to go there you ask? Well, only because it’s simply astonishing. See, Jus-Ed was only 6 years old when his grandparents made him the drummer for their Jazz duo "Tomi & Eddy". He toured the country with them, from bars to lounges, and beyond, then afterwards, at the still tender age of 10, he attended the University of Bridgeport to study percussion! That’s commitment for you, right there.
After his Jazz band days came to an end, Jus-Ed became a DJ, inspired as he was by the radio waves emanating from New York, chief among them the sounds of the late great Frankie Crocker from WBLS.Jus-Ed wasted no time and quickly applied all he knew about rhythm and moving crowds to the turntable and was soon rocking crowds as a DJ. Jus-Ed the DJ was born.
For reasons that are unknown, Jus-Ed “retired” in 1985, all but disappearing from the scene. Maybe he was tired with the music industry, maybe he needed a vacation. Whatever it was he stayed away for a long time. Then in 2001, he returned, and he has not looked back since.
Since 2001, Jus-Ed has more than made up for lost time. He has built up quite the following since his return, showcasing his skills on numerous radio shows both on the air and online, and via his and partner Vic Money’s, Underground Quality label, which has thrown parties at venues throughout the tri-state area. He's also hit the road again, spinning in clubs all around the globe. Jus-Ed has also hit the studio, hard. In the last few years, Jus-Ed has released five albums, close to 30 singles, a bunch of remixes and more. Basically, Jus-Ed is all about the hustle.
All these accomplishments aside, at the end of the nite, it all boils down to the mix, and what sweet mixes they are. It is evident when listening to Jus-Ed behind the decks that he goes far beyond simply playing music; it's as if he infuses his sets, and the very air with all his years of experience and know how, making Deep House sound even deeper.
Jus-Ed’s hustle and the commitment he brings forth, serve as inspiration and motivation, and for that he is our pick for the first DJ of the Week on our new and improved 1200Dreams.com!
