On e small pr oblem with having so much tale nt in one place is t hat it can be diffic ult to dec ide on exa ctly what to do. But sometimes a good ar tist emerg es, making the choic e relative ly easy.
basketQASE Rodriguez is one su ch artist. A born an d bred Chi cagoan, hi s talent e xtends fro m the upri ght bass t o Ableton DJing and beat makin g. I had a n opportun ity to wit ness this guy perfor m an Ablet on routine , and I wa s impresse d (anyone who knows me can att est to how tough a c ritic i am of those who CLAIM to be DJs, but don’t quite mee t the requ irements). His mixes were on p oint, his song selec tion exqui site, and he sprinkl ed in some of his ow n work jus t to keep things int eresting!
basketQASE has been honing his skills si nce his ch ildhood. I n fifth gr ade (circa 1989), he wrote and recorded his first rhyme, and in 1994, he got his first DJ setup – a pair of Ge mini turnt ables, a m ixer, and some hip h op records . From the re, he pic ked up a R oland R-70 ; yet, loo king back, he believ es that he was a “la te bloomer ” with reg ard to mus ic theory and classi cal traini ng. In hig h school h e began to dabble wi th the tru mpet, then in colleg e he studi ed the upr ight bass. From ther e he delve d deep int o jazz the ory, which helped hi m think ab out ways t o push his own creat ive bounda ries.
Fast-forward several years, an d basketQA SE is now an impress ive multid imensional musician who is as invested i n spreadin g dope hip hop and j azz sounds as he is in expandi ng his own artistry. If there is a theme that unit es the bre adth of hi s work, it is trying to get “l isteners t o dig beat s outside of 4/4 met er for the sake of e xpanding h ip hop lyr icism and urban danc e music in to differe nt types o f phrasing and caden ce.” He ga ins inspir ation for his creati ons from j ust about everything his sense s allow hi m to exper ience. Eve rything fr om Debussy to Dave H olland is currently in rotatio n on his h eadphones.
